This Sunday we will focus on the Advent theme of "Peace".
I don't mean to write this blog as a substitute for the sermon or the Advent devotional which will be shared as part of our worship this Sunday (which, by the way, should be neat to see).
I want to talk about peace from a personal standpoint. I have read a lot about pastors, ministry, and the pandemic. Many pastors have quit, lost their positions after their congregations ran them out, or have taken on much additional stress.
I can relate to disagreement, unknown, grief, and anxiety about the future. Most pastors can. But I can also share with you that God has given me peace. A practical question regarding peace: how?
How do I keep peace in the middle of such difficult times? As I share a couple suggestions, please don't think I have anything perfected. I am still subjected to the ups and downs of human experience. But I do hope some of these steps I take will help you to increase peace in your own life.
1. I worship the Lord. I don't have to worry about what others think. I sing. I talk to Him. I meditate on His word. I encourage you to keep developing your relationship with God in personal ways.
2. I pray for others. Truly, it is harder to hold animosity toward people you lift up in prayer.
3. I turn off the news. Seriously, I think this is a big key. Getting information is one thing, but having it on blast for hours a day?
4. I try to encourage others. Negativity toward others doesn't lead to peace. It leads to turmoil. If I can encourage others, even those with whom I may disagree, it puts me in a more peaceful posture toward both Jesus and them.
I hope you find these practical suggestions helpful. What steps do you take to ensure peace in your life?
In Christ,
Pastor Kevin
