I'm sure we've all had lots of conversations this week about the weather. And I'm sure some of those conversations included an evaluation of the weather forecasting personnel.
Hype, inaccuracy, our favorite forecaster. On and on we go. Hey, the weather brings impact to all of us so it's a natural topic of conversation.
But how do we respond on the other side of it? Especially knowing they have been correct over the past few weeks in alerting us to major storms and snowfalls? No, they haven't gotten the amounts exactly right, but let's think about this.
A few weeks ago, they accurately predicted a storm which started somewhere around Minnesota, headed south, then turned north and toward the coast. The following weekend, they predicted additional snow and understated the amounts. And of course this week, they have told us for days of something that wasn't even on the radar as of this weekend. Yet, it came with its predicted length and fury and affected people over a 2,000 mile distance.
As we consider this type of technology, are we amazed they can do these types of things? Or are we given to griping that they missed it by a few inches here or there? Do we hold them to standards of perfection, or do we realize even they don't know exactly what storms will do and have to adjust forecasts as storms get closer?
Does this type of technology assist in pointing you to God? Does the technology's imperfection, despite its impressiveness, point you to God? I hope so. As good as they are, they don't know exactly what will happen. They are human.
Let this speak to expectations of people and technology in our lives. Let this speak to our collective hearts, and how much we complain. Let's find spaces of awe for the possibilities available to us in this day and age. Let's continue trusting God who knows way more than even the best technology.
Romans 11:33-36:
Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways!
"For who has known the mind of the Lord, or who has been his counselor?"
"Or who has given a gift to him that he might be repaid?" For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen.
