"The Self-Aware Christian" may sound like a pretty selfish title. My goal in this post will involve taking a look inside, but not in pursuit of self-absorption.
Instead, true self-awarenes should lead us to a Biblically accurate view of ourselves, an increasing love for others, and an inquenchable desire to glorify God!
A few questions today to help you think about how you relate to God and others:
- Do we really know our sins? Do we regularly talk with God about characteristics we want the Spirit to change in our lives? Really, without this type of honesty before God we can remain stuck in unhealthy patterns, even self deception.
- Would people in our lives say we have a healthy love for others - especially the weak, lonely, downtrodden, and brokenhearted?
- Do we have a person with whom you can regularly share our faults, failures, and sins?
- Are our expectations for people based on the values of a political party or socio-economic class rather than the Bible?
- Do we know when we should listen rather than talk?
- Do we have good relationships only with people who think and live like we do?
If we give these questions an honest look, we will ALL find shortcomings. My goal in posting this is not condemnation. Rather, perhaps this could challenge us to honesty before God and others. When this happens, God humbles us and allows us insight into how to truly put others' interests above our own.
Philippians 2:4 - Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.
May God graciously provide growth in our ability to consider and intervene in the interests of others.
In Christ,
Pastor Kevin
