Today I'll go with something very much on my mind.
I recently traveled to a foreign mission field, a place where many nations have converged. While I look forward to fully unpacking this in person in the coming weeks, let me today share two quick points of reflection. Yes, even shorter than the typical pastor's three points.
Point #1: Foreign missions should mirror local missions.
Always. 100%. Insert whatever slang for "Full go, all the time, no doubt about it" you want. The simple concept of doing local missions in a similar way to doing foreign missions just makes sense. Why on earth should we ask someone to train and do something in the crucible of discomfort in a foreign place which they never do at home?
Whatever we do abroad should mirror what we do at home. Let us train and strive to this end as we consider foreign mission!
Point #2: I am a work in progress.
We should all say this of ourselves, no doubt. What I mean here involves my part-time role in leading others to engage missions in a foriegn place. I have told several people about the challenges of my recent trip. Navigating many circumstances beyond our control took time and energy. Growth occurs in trial, difficulty, and challenge. I look forward to continuing to sharpen my skills for these particular tasks. I am excited both for what has taken place and for what the future holds!
As you consider these two reflection points, ask yourself:
- What does local missions look like for you?
- How will you give and receive training and challenge yourself in the mission field of your local area?
- In what specific ways are you currently experiencing growth?
In Christ,
Pastor Kevin
